subtitled
Experimental Publication ; 2021
about the project
Inspired by my childhood of learning Chinese through subtitles, subtitled is a quarterly publication that strives to spread the beauty of foreign films. The 2021 Summer issue is on the Japanese film Shoplifters, thus the masthead is mixed with the Japanese kanji for “subtitles,” which is 字幕 (jimaku). Through this project, I want to show that there is so much more out in the world if you overcome the one inch tall barrier of subtitles.
The book is broken up into several layers. There is the "base," which holds the main article text. The long strips on top that hold the images from the film is meant to mimic the 2.4:1 screen ratio so that as you flip through the book, the reader can experience it like a movie. The smaller pages on the bottom introduce the actors and the director in a much different style. I want to The smaller spreads on the bottom highlight the actors and the director of the film and are designed in a different style to express a different kind of creativity, because they’re artists and not just the characters. The small sheets of colorful plastic are lighting gels, the material people use to adjust lighting of the composition when filming.
